Teen Review: The Woman in Me

The Woman in Me by Britney Spears

The Woman in Me is a powerful, touching, and incredibly moving memoir by Britney Spears. From when Britney was a child, she describes her whole life throughout the book. She keeps you on your toes and captivates you with her amazing storytelling skills. It describes how she got started in the music industry and how she was pushed down and controlled during her adult life through her conservatorship. She does an amazing job describing everything and you can feel the emotion pouring through each page with each word.

The memoir starts with her first memory to her now. Spears does an amazing job with the timing, by not focusing her book on mainly one period at a time. Even though her conservatorship was an important aspect she does a good job of not making it the whole book and sharing her whole story and how she ended up where she is now. You read her journey through childhood to rise to fame and then how it and everyone turned on her, including her family. You see how strong she really was and how not just anyone can survive what she went through. You see her grow as a kid and then become a wonderful mother. You see her battles with her family and her struggles with love. You see how much the media walked over her and had no compassion for her.

When reading The Woman in Me you feel as though Spears is just talking to you and telling you her life story. She keeps you engaged no matter what. Her writing style in the beginning is very hopeful and later changes to very dark and strained. This really helps capture the mood of her life during those time periods. I felt as though I was talking to a dear friend.  You can feel the intensity pouring through the pages. The main thing that was truly inspiring coming from Brittney was the hope she had. It was so strong throughout the whole book and really inspired me and I think it will inspire many. Even though I knew little about Britney Spears I was still able to read this book and very much enjoy it. She does a great job of explaining everything. The only thing I would recommend knowing is just that she was a very popular pop singer in the early 2000s, which a lot of people know about her already.

I would recommend this book to anyone. Even though memoirs aren’t for everyone and not everyone is the biggest fan of Brittney Spears this shows the true story and I think everyone should read what she went through. As a person who is not really a fan or reads memoirs I definitely don’t regret reading this book. It will have you convincing other people to read it. I remember after reading The Woman in Me I couldn’t stop talking about it. If I had to choose a demographic I would choose people who are into pop culture and have always been intrigued with what happened to Brittney Spears and how she ended up where she is now. I would give this book a rating of excellent. I really felt her emotion through the book and she did an amazing job sharing her story. Some similar books are Spare by Prince Harry, My Name Is Barbra by Barba Streisand, and Paris: The Memoir by Paris Hilton. These are all powerful stories and have in common how the media is very powerful in a wrong way and how easily the media is able to twist things and how the public believes them.
